copy paste the target of the shortcut to the location of the shortcut, delete the shortcut, rename the copied file

I am not sure what you are talking about but I think you want your shortcut to be original file (not a shortcut).

To do this, locate the file and drag it to your desired place while holdong CTRL !!

You can right click on the short-cut, find where it is located, and copy the real file over top of the short-cut.
