There are hundreds of breeds of horses and ponies. Here's a link that lists them all: http://www.ansi.okstate.edu/breeds/horses/
As far as popularity goes, I found a poll on About.com
http://horses.about.com/library/polls/blbreedpoll.htm.
Quarter Horse
Arabian
Morgan
Thoroughbred
Appaloosa
Warmbloods
Gaited
Pony
Draft
Grade (Mixed-blood)
Personally, I love paints - but I noticed that none of the color-breeds were listed. I know that Pintos, paints and palaminos are all very popular.
I could not find a link with actual horse population statistics by breed...Sorry.

That's something that will vary depending on whether you mean in a specific country or the entire world.
Assuming you mean just in the USA, the Quarter Horse is the most common breed. I haven't been able to find information on the proper statistics for the rest of the top 10 though. The Paint horse, Thoroughbred and Arabian are undoubtedly somewhere on that list as well.
You might want to contact the American Horse Council:
http://horsecouncil.org/
They would probably be the most likely to have the most reliable statistics on this matter. If you e-mail them and say that you need this info for a school/4H/whatever project I would imagine they'd be willing to help. It's worth a try at least.
