not exactly true.
many places will not bother if they get back their merchandise, but other places will try to press charges.
it also depends on the police in the area, some are too busy to deal with minor crimes like petty theft, however if a store can prove you have done this multiple times they will often times prosecute.
There really is not a rule as to what a business or the police will do.
you got lucky, learn from that and realize you may not get lucky next time.

For an ite worth 25 cents they can arrest you and teach you a lesson. It's the principle, even got a 50 cents gum, they can make an example out of youm, most likel to steal - shoplift something over a buck to be arrested, it doesn't matter, if your very youg like 16 they can call your parents, even for stealing a lipgloss at Duane Reade for $8.00 won't be wrth it, people are good at stealing, but not that good, you can do it 365 days a year, 500 times, but one time get caught! Even professionals got caught tobecome professional. Taking people valuables or their property is a felony of grand larceny, under 1,000 is a misdedeamor and every states has different alws that count up to, cops can be yoru best friend, or y ou worst nightmare (enemy - nemeseses) dependingon theur mood, tehyc an help, or look for anything to make a callar (to arrest so they look good fun for them putting the silver bracelts on) I wonder if hey get payed for arresteing, na , I hear some people even g eta rrested for almost no reason like the security guards they like to excercize their authority

False. Don' t listen to that person! You can be arrested and charged with theft. You can be arrested for stealing anything! You can certainly be arrested and charged with theft for amounts under $50, for amounts under $5. I work in retail and I have seen people of all ages steal "something small". Well, they get arrested. They have an arrest record, the beginning of a rap sheet. Don't allow ignorance to ruin your life. Ignorance of the law is not a defense.

false, they have the right to arrest you even if one cent. In some cases the court will let you go only if you are a minor or under the vision of social workers.
Dont steal again even if its nothing. Its not a good thing, especiaaly if you are a girl. Be proud of your self.

The crime is not a felony if the value is under $100, but if the store prosecutes you can still be arrested and go to jail.
Wal Mart decided to not prosecute first time shop lifters because it cost them too much. They let it be announced in the national news and had a plague of theft that caused them to reverse their stand a few months later. If the store wants to prosecute you then they can, and they can make it stick. It wasn't that long ago when people went to prison for stealing a loaf of bread.

Yes,
You can be charged with a 488 pc (Petty Theft)
Below $400 is a Petty Theft 488pc
Above$400 is a Grand Theft 487pc
On a petty theft, you can go to jail, they will take a booking photo of you and you will be release and given a citation to appear for court.
If you steal above $400, same thing happens but you have to stay longer in jail. If you want to get out of jail, bail would be set higher. Once you pay bail, you can get out of jail and you will get a cititaion to appear in court. If you do not show up for your scheduled court date, there will be a warrant issued for your arrest.
Hope that helps..

False, In order to be considered grand theft, the total value of what was taken must exceed a certain dollar amount. The value of the property stolen to constitute the crime as grand theft varies by locale and other specifics. When the value of the stolen property does not exceed the specified dollar amount, the crime is considered petty theft. The law in all jurisdictions draws a legal distinction between petty and grand theft. In most cases, petty theft is a misdemeanor crime that is punishable by no more than one year of incarceration and a maximum fine.

No. It's not true.
You may be arrested even for small amounts -- it depends on how often it happens, or how bored the police and whoever catches you are... the more they have to do, they less likely they are to deal with smaller amounts.
But that doesn't mean you're never at risk. And the more often you do it, the more likely they will be to prosecute all the other times -- remember that they have a certain period after the event during which they can bring charges.
