I have 6 small tiger barbs (2 green, 2 albino, and 2 regular) in a 10 gal. tank ( they're less than an inch long, but I know they'll get bigger, so I'm in the process of moving them into a 20 gal.). Once they're in the bigger tank I plan to get a couple of other fish. My choices right now are pictus catfish or bala sharks are these compatible with tiger barbs?

If not, what are some compatible fishes that I can add to the tank?

Pictushttp://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/species.php?species_id=276 catfish should be fine with barbs,if you have the room get 2-3 instead of one as they are happier, more active and fun to watch in a group although if your tank is to full one would be alright.

The pictus should be fine with the tigers. A bala gets about the size of an Oscar and needs at least a 55 gallon tank, but really will do best in a 125 gallon or so for the extra swimming room. Please take the bala off our list of potential fish for your 20 gallon.

You look smitten by utilising putting tiger barbs and a pictus catfish jointly. lol IF the tiger barbs are sufficiently massive to no longer get eaten and assuming you upload a minimum of five-6 tiger barbs it's going to be fantastic. different than that, the foremost to fulfillment with tiger barbs is retaining them n a school of roughly 6.. extra is larger. they gained't provide different fish as lots issues that way. additionally, shop them with different fish that have not have been given long fins and that could swim extremely quickly. maximum tetras, different barbs and danios are good options. I have a pic cat in with severel barbs, and some Kribs, everyone gets alog fine. He was also leaving with my needlenose gar and some barbs, but he kept eating all the rosey red minnows, that are the all the gar eat. It was getting too expensive.
I didn't have any luck with the bala shark, one completely disspeared and the other got eaten my a cichlid.

I think that a bala shark would need more room because they can grow pretty big. Be careful not to put too many fish in your tank.
