That is called a neutral drop. Probably because you will drop your transmission if you keep doing it.

yes it is bad. you are putting a huge strain on many internal transmission components. what it hurts the most is the internal clutches of the transmission. you are also putting a lot of strain on your axles and cv joints. if you don't want to spend thousands on a new transmission, then i suggest not doing it. if you only did it once, then it is probably ok but you did probably put some wear on it that wouldn't of been there. brake torqueing would be less harmful but i don't suggest that either. just romp on the gas and hope it burns out on its on power. if not then i suggest getting a more powerful car, or stop acting like that car is fast.

Used to do it all the time in our 1982 Granada Hearse (2.8 V6 Auto). Did it save any fuel? Probably not but as were skint, ever little helped as they say. Had no problems whatsover in putting it in, and out, of gear, just used to give it a few revs to match engine speed - it was as smooth as silk. Great on long downhills - we could hit 70mph in neutral. Good times........ :-)

You and I both know it is. You are shocking the system. Putting a lot of pressure and strain on parts. It's all fun and games until the transmission falls out. good luck.

yes it is bad, and for than just the transmission. the drive shaft U-joints and rear end also have to handle the shock loads. it has been known to break axles, pinion gears, etc.
