Changing oil (to me) is so easy that I could not imagine anybody can screw that up. Until recently.
I go to the local auto parts dealer (R&S Strauss) and they've beens screwing things up. Then it turns out that even my Audi Dealer's been doing sub par work. The new audi dealer was showing me the sub par (patch) work until I told them it was their brothers in tools that screwed things up.
It seems to me that quality work is thing of the past. I've been getting back into fixing my own car (the past year) because I just can't trust the "professional" anymore.
Sorry about the rant.

As for the 3/4 of inch - it should be OK. Every car comes with certain amount of play. Certain amount of oil gets thrown up while the engine is running (the harder the more oil is thrown up and not in the drain pan at the bottom).
Two things can happen if the oil is overfilled too much. The bottom of the crankshaft hits the oil makint the oil foam (froath). When your oil pump sprays the oil, it ends up pumping air instead of oil. But this is rare. You have to really over fill the oil. And even then modern oil comes with anti foaming agent added just for this purpose.
The second thing is that when the crankshaft hits the oil, it slows down. Some computers (ECU) detects misfire by the slight acceleration / deceleration after spark fires. When it detects the shaft slow down it thinks that there was a misfire and your Check engine light comes on. Then (even though there no real broken parts) you will be spending money and time chasing ghosts.
David D says that you'll blow a seal if you over fill the oil. Actually that's only true for automatic transmission oil (not the engine oil). If your transmissions oil was ever overfilled (even by one quart), stop the car at the instance and have it drained right there. Or go really slow till you do (like under 10 MPH). My best buddy's girlfriend tried to do him a favor when she borried his car. So she just decide to add some transmission oil (just for good luck). Well a week later the transmission seals blew.
It is time for you to get another mechanic or just do it yourself.

I dont' think that is enough oil to make a difference. I doubt if it will hit the crank and splash. You'll be OK. If you want, pull the drain plug and let some drain out.
Take the car somewhere else, next time you need the oil changed.

the overfilling is very harmful to your engine, it causes air bubbles to form, which accelerates engine wear, as for everything else, try switching walmarts or try someone else
