My Daughter is 7 and she has her own Cell phone. Whenever she's away, like at her friends home, I can always contact my daughter. She understands the consequences that can get her in trouble that will lead her to lose her Cell phone. Also, Dad always check to see who my daughter is calling. All of the numbers she knows I know them.
Yes, Cell phone is taken from child at 7:00 PM and is given back to the Child on her way to school.
My daughter has her own laptop, which is fully protected. She can only visit sites that I permit.
My daughter has a DS system. Games help educate kids.
My daughter has an Ipod. We all love our songs.
My daughter is well trained, and I am a very good father according to my opinion.

Most ten year olds, probably not.
I might make exceptions if the child is unusually responsible and has a need for these items. (Has to use public transportation regularly to get to and from school, or has to be responsible for younger children at times.)
I would certainly let a ten year old use my cell phone, with supervision, as well as a home computer. Game consoles might be another matter, depending on the child and how responsible he or she is.
Parents should say no at the appropriate times. Kids grow up fast enough these items can be justified in a few years.

I included my 12-year-old in the family share plan, and it was an excellent choice. I wish I had thought of it when he was 10.
(As for everything else, he does own a TV, Xbox 360, Playstation 2, computer, stereo, and iPod. I don't have an issue with giving him material items because he's such an awesome kid, responsible, helpful, and does so great in school. He plays the guitar and drums. He also plays a mean game of golf.)
Those items do not reduce parent-child time. Nor is he selfish, overweight, disrespectful, shallow, and so on. Honestly, folks, ever hear of a little thing called
"m o d e r a t i o n".

I'd only go as far as a cell phone for emergencies. My future kid is the type of person who would have a multitude of lessons and after-school activities.
I wouldn't give them a laptop, iPod, or PSP because they will get broken and/or stolen. Video game consoles are fine.
Some parents do spoil their kids...but not my family because we're poor. I got my first cell when I was 18, my first iPod when I was 18, and my first laptop at 18. That was only last year!

Laptop and cell phone no, games and music yes. Although it wouldn't be an Ipod it would probably be a sansa.
And those would have limits on them.

If I had a 10-year old, I would want her/him to have a cell phone for emergencies but would most likely used a pre-paid plan & explain carefully what the limits were so there wouldn't be huge costs involved. I'd insist that the land line is used whenever possible.

No! Not a good idea! They will never communicate with you!!
Their attention will always be on these modern day contraptions!Life with your kid is so short and you will miss out on all the fun and memories you could be having with your pre-teen!!!Your photo album will be of your kid holding a cell phone,laptop,ipod,PS3,PSP,Wii????

NO! times 6!!! Not at age 10! Maybe a cheap MP3 player at that age. Nothing that if they lost it would really matter much, because they most likely will lose it or break it.
Mine didn't get a phone till they had their own car and drivers' license! then it was for safety! First time they added $100 to our cell bill, I blocked texting, too!!! I don't care that one of them is in college! Till they pay their own bill, it is my job to be the parent and make decisions about that stuff!

No. I wouldn't buy my 16 or 17 year old a cell phone, they'd have to get a job and buy and pay the monthly bill them selves, iPod and laptop at 10 yrs. - no, the others...I'd have to think about.
