put it in a savings account. Works for me, especially one that penalises you if you make more than one withdrawl in a month (like $5 fee for more than one withdrawl).

First DON"T save money leftover from your check. Pay yourself first. Can you set aside 10 percent of your income and then spend the rest on other things.

Many companies offer a payroll deduction plan where they will take the money out of your check before you even get it and save it for you. Or sometimes if you have automated deposit you can use two accounts and set a percentage to go into savings and a percentage to go into checking.

Pay yourself first by saving it UP FRONT is the best way to go. I recommend almost any Suze Orman book to explain the basics of personal financial management.

Budget your savings first an pay your self before spending anything else. If your employer will deduct your savings from your check they can send it directly to savings. If not deposit your check and transfer your savings amount to savings. If you wait to see what is leftover you will always be broke. A direct withdrawal you never see like to a 401K plan is much less likely to be neglected.
If you are short on self control you can send off a check to another bank that is not easy to get to and only savings. Once you have a little nestegg it will start to be fun to save.

If you only save what you have "left over" you will never learn to save. Save first (the old "pay yourself first" advice) and then spend what you have left over.

Give the money to someone else to keep for you. Have a person you trust open an account in their name and put your money in it so it can earn interest, but you are unable to spend it unwisely.
