Because it stops EVERYWHERE. I rode from Richmond to Merced (a 1 hour drive) and it made so many stops it ended up taking 3 hours. I could've driven to Fresno in that time.

You will be stopping at many cities, and I think the account for late departure etc. Itls a great ride, I've taken the train a few times from Riverside to Santa Rosa. I would take the train over driving, just because you aren't doing the driving, you can sleep, use the restroom, even get a bite to eat and they have plug in's for a laptop etc. And it'll cost about the same if you were to drive considering the cost of gas!The greek salads are good, I'd stay away from the burgers though! Hope you have a great trip.

The coast starlight is suchhhhh a beautiful ride. I guess it takes awhile because it hugs the terrain.. not a straight highway shot..and it makes a lot of stops but you get to see parts of the coast that no one else can see.. you go by places that no cars get to go on. It's breathtaking. I would reccomend it in a heartbeat! I would LOVE to take the train again!!!

There's only one set of tracks, and commercial trains have the right of way. The Amtrak train often has to stop on a sidebar to let them pass.

Because an amtrak goes slow or it just shows how big our world is.
