My laptop says detect proxy settings. What does that mean

u need to configure ur laptop for the correct proxy server...to configure the proxy..goto internet explorer > tools > internet options den click on connection tab if ur using a lan click on lan setting or choose the desire connection check use proxy and pu t ur connection's proxy and port ( u will get the proxy and port from ur ISP) den click on apply and ur laptop's proxy is now configured

Many corporations have a proxy server. It's a server that acts as a barrier between your computer and the outside world. If you know you don't have a proxy server, you can just uncheck the box, or you can auto-detect. Either way it doesn't hurt.
