There are many views to this but the way I see it, it is all about appreciation and a person's expectations in life. Some people can be doing decently and getting by, and that is exactly what they at least hoped for so they are happy. But some people have much higher expectations so they think that what they already have is not good enough, therefore, they don't appreciate what good things they do have. Sometimes, there are people who don't realize the reality of poverty and homelessness. So they take what should always be appreciated for granted.

Which is more important: Reality? or the Appearance of Reality?
The thing of it is, for most people most of the time, the more important is what people perceive to be reality.
E.g., look at the American culture: no matter how good a job, how good a wife, how good the children are, no matter how much they own, they will feel they are "poor" and cheer for the downtrodden.
To a certain extent, this is good. However, people often lose sight of what reality is, and bemoan their misfortunes, even though they are really doing well.

Because it does. Everyone has moments that suck. It doesn't matter if a million bazillion others have a day which sucks 20 times worse then mine sucked. The day I have is mine. Theirs is theirs. Theirs sucks for them and mine sucks for me.
Think about it: if you are in severe pain, but someone else is in worse pain, does your pain actually physically hurt any less? Of course not. Same idea.
.....and I don't think I have ever said sucks so many times in my entire life!!! Lol

I don't know but I have found(after climbing out of the depressing swamp of adolescence) that it's always best to try to see how any situation could be worse. Sure your job sucks but you have one. Sure your signifigant other isn't perfect but they don't beat you(and if they do your wasting time thinking about other peoples lives) Sure your kids give you problems but they aren't disabled in any way. Or if your children are disabled at least you have them.
It's all in the perception.

Because it does suck and and being a negative thinker does not help him at all.
Ideally, he should be gratetful of the fact that his life is not as bad. He should learn to accept it if he cannot improve it, be thankful that it is not worse, stop whining, move on, and try to make his life better.
Or simply put, he should ditch negativity, think positively, and consider himself lucky!

Envy. Dissatisfaction with one's life is based on envy of another. Envy, however, is not based in reality nor is it based on fact.
It is easy to assume that another's life is "better" than our own. If only we were to learn the truth. And, there are far too many examples to list here in this small space.

Because everything is relative. Because the grass often looks greener on the other side. The blueprint in your mind for your life falls short of reality.

Because some people can only really empathize with themselves. They may see someone else's life as being worse, but that is still just someone else. It's a 'me' thing.

their life isn't that bad, to you? each person has their own perception of their life, and it seems like most people think other peoples lives are better than their own, but maybe those people that we think are so..."well off" really don't think they are. its a mental thing. obviously they aren't happy with what they have.

You can usually associate that with low levels of self-esteem. There are a wide range of things that can cause self-esteem issues. Anything from failing at things, to lack of support from parents, to relationship problems. You cant really help someone with these issues unless they want to recieve it themselves.
