My mother is terrified a group kids in their late teens and early twentys have been jumping her fence and her nieghbors fence. (She has a 10 ft tall ivy fence around the house.) When the person next door yelled at the kids, they blew up his shed the next night. The have also been caught trying to posion his dog. My mother has heard gunshots in the area. She cannot afford to move, and the police said they are aware of gang activity and are investigating but nothing has happened in the last 3 months, of this being reported. This is in a small town, which intill recently has been very safe. The problem started when they put in low income housing two blocks down the road. Does anyone have any suggestions?

The city had to approve the housing. They have a duty to protect citizens within their city limits. Your mother should start calling neighbors, and get several to attend city council meetings to demand increased police patrol, etc. Call the local television and radio to complain. If the neighbors don't unite and demand protection of property and life, they will lose it all!

I would get a program that is run with a CD that runs off of a video camera. It might cost around $3000 but is worth every cent since it is admissable in court for convictions. Any company that serves the community with DVD and video equipment, will be able to give you a free estimate and possibly install for a certain price.

Install motion light detectors, if the light comes on, it will alert all people there is someone out there.

Post the property No Tresspassing signs after you find out what her real rights are as where her property line is and the city right away is.

Your poor mom. That must be awful for her. I'm sure that she doesn't really want to injure anyone. What she should do is call the police - each and every time! That is their job! I am sure that they would be more than happy to help get rid of the gang element in her neighborhood. I considered suggesting that she get a dog, but since there have been reports of poisoned dogs from these non-people, that would break her heart if it happened to her dog. Maybe you could install some motion detection lights for her in both the front and back yard areas. These non-people do not like to be seen in the light. Make sure that she has good locks on her doors and windows too.

The best idea is to nail barbed wire to the fence just above and just below so that they blighter s cut themselves and rip their clothes. You will then be taken to Court and found Gulty
of setting a man trap fined and have a criminal record. So it is not such a good idea. Are you sure it is youngsters from the low costs estate/ you may find you are in for anasty suprise. i wouls continue to complain to the poice your local councellor form a homewatch group and get everyone in the neighbour hood making a row and just sio long as it is not you all the time something will be done about this low level but frightening affair. It's not a case of being wimps it is just that the law in UK is slanted too heavily in favour of the wrongdoer.

Had a similar problem in a my old house you can take action:-

Firstly you'll find your mother isn't alone (all her neighbours will also be brassed off I guarantee)

The police hate their crime figures to look bad. One person can be ignored but if your mother and all her neighbours complain all the time the police WILL take action. They'll have too to look good!

It sounds a bit naff but neighbour hood watches work, the reason these kids get away with it is that they are targeting one or two individuals, everybody has to stand together and be counted in that community.

Contact the police about setting up neighbourhood watch you have to have a certain percentage backing the scheme or it won't get off the ground. They all have to claim back there community together!

If your mothers community is too apathetic to do this then whether she can afford it or not move her out!

as for 'ruling classes' comments We are slightly more civilised than we used to be try and come up to date.

Call the police anytime you all have any of that kind of activity. Even if it means doing it daily. Talk to the local justice of the peace, municipal judge if you live in a city, or maybe a constable might help if he just passed by daily to check things out. Get a camera, to install inside your property, like in the corners of your house where it meets with the roof, even if one of these is fake. Put up No Trespassing signs inside your property. Do not let them know you are intimidated. Also complain to the housing authority, they might have to get a security officer if you get enough people in your area to sign a petition. Also talk to your county judge and commissioners about the problem. If nothing else works call your congressman.

That's a very difficult situation but maybe she could install an inexpensive surveillance camera ,aldi had them recently, this could be used as evidence for the police to finally do something about the gang.

Suggest to your mother to buy a nice big and cuddly dog..for her companionship..but that also can be a nice watch dog. Like a Labrador. The kids will stay away....and if they even try to harm it you can sue for animal cruelty which now in U.S. is a major crime.

That is horrible. I suggest calling the community relations officer for your city. The neighbors need to get together and notify police. It is tresspassing.
