Neither (maybe somewhere in the middle). He's a science fiction writer.
He may base some things on science, but he then goes a long way towards being a crackpot in the process of his hypothesizing.

He is a total crackpot, who apparently still has a following. His work has been refuted by every legitimate scientist who has bothered to respond to it. He is a pop-culture hero and has never been published in any scientific journal. Not one of his claims has ever been verified. This is what happens when you publish through the popular press, like Velikofsky did. A lot of people get misled because there is no peer review. People who go this route do so because their ideas are nonsense and idle speculation that would never stand up to scrutiny or rigor.

But then, your average reader doesn't care whether it is accurate or truthful, only if it gives them that woo-woo feeling.

He is a writer/researcher who has taken some logical material and extrapolated it into a series of scenarios that might have some legitimacy and again might not... His work is interesting and stimulating in that it provides something you can agree with or disagree with as you choose.

He's neither. He's a writer/researcher who presented a different point of view on things.
