I've seen that sometimes when cord is sown onto the edge of a coat/jacket, that is sandwiched between layers of material, yet I cannot figure out how this is done.

What is the easiest way to sew cord on like this?

It's piping. It's a cord sewn into a tube with a lip. You position the lip along your seam allowance, with the tube hidden in between your layers. When you sew it and turn your garment right side out, the piping will be there.

You can buy piping, or you can make your own very easily. http://www.alternative-windows.com/binding.htm

You can buy piping as a trim ,or make your own. Just cut a long strip of the fabric you are using. Cut it long enough to trim your jacket, with 1/2" spare at both ends. Cut the strip about an inch wide(wider if using thicker cord). Then use a plain cord(same length as fabric strip),place it in the middle of the wrong side of fabri, so when you fold the fabric strip in half, with cording in the middle, the right side of fabric will face out. Machine stitch using a zipper foot very close to the cording. Now take this strip& place it in the seam or hem you want to sew it into. Pin it in place first & then stitch on the outside careful to catch all layers of fabric. I hope this helps.

the cord comes with a material attached ... it's not a plain cord ... then you sew the cords material between the two
layers.

check out the material dept at a craft store or even walmart
and you'll see them
