The fireplace is brick, but the wall above appears to be sheetrock only.

Probably. Please know I am not trying to discourage the idea, but rather giving another viewpoint. I am not sure I would place a television above the fireplace. Typically in a living space, either the fireplace is the focal point or the television. Do you ever use your fireplace? If so, would you ever use them at the same time? For me, it would be a little strange seeing the fireplace lit and also watching tv above it. It seems that only one of the two should be the focal point. Personally, I would choose the fireplace. They can be decorated beautifully. Even if you don't use the fireplace, you can place candles or candle screens inside to showcase the area. Even if you decide not to use the fireplace at all, I think it may be too much to have the television above it. Best of luck!

You can mount it up there with no problem if the wall was built right. If you actually use the fireplace, that could be a problem down the road. Fireplaces put out a lot of heat and moisture which rises straight up and causes problems with the television. I've seen tons of them mounted there, but I imagine the repair guys are seeing tons coming in with problems due to moisture. Since the flat screens are still fairly expensive you'll want to take it into consideration when deciding whether or not to light a fire. An electric insert would probably be your best bet if you want to use it for heat; you can keep the flue shut and actually keep the heat inside the house instead of having the majority of it going up the chimney.

If it a decorative fireplace only. with no fires, gas or wood or
electric. go for it.
If the fireplace is usable. Remember heat rises and all the
chips in the flatscreen are soldered into place. Check with
City Hall and find out the code for your neighborhood. :-})

Sure, as long as there is a stud or something to drill into and support the weight of the television. You could also drill into brick, but it would make a permanent hole. It's entirely up to you.
