Please this is a big decision for me so I want only serious people who know what I'm talking about. I have a four year old boy and at the moment I don't want to get pregnant againg. I have been with my son's daddy for 6 yrs. At the moment I'm attending school and so thefore want to finish school. I'm still very young (23yrs) so I'm definitly not in a rush. I want to know if any women on this website know anything about this method and can maybe give me some good feed back on what to do? I have done research of my own but I'm still undecided. I have already the date of my appointment to have the IUD insert. This is why I still have about 1 week to think about it more. I will be using the mirena for 5 years. Please help!

Hi,

FIRST OF ALL DO NOT CONFUSE IT WITH THE IUD.

A MIRENA COIL IS AN IUS.

My wife had one fitted after she started having very heavy periods with a lot of pain.

I have put below the details from a UK site called NetDoctor (good site).

If you did not already know the Mirena coil differs from a standard coil because it contains a hormone in its body which is slow released and helps reduce heavy periods, and pain.

My wife and I would recommend you to have this fitted as it is an excellent form of birth control, you will not know it is there, and you will not have any worries for 5 years.

Coils do hurt a bit when they have to be removed but the Gyno people know how to do it as painless as possible.

The coil itself has tails which hang through the cervix to enable removal, but again you will not feel them, your partner may fell the ends if he penetrates 'really' deeply but it will not bother or hurt him in any way, or interfere with sex.

Fitting is straight forward, the coil is stretched straight, inside a thin tube.

This tube is inserted through the cervix and the coil pushed out, like using a syringe plunger.

As it leaves the tube it opens out and the doctor will just pull it back down again slightly so that it sits nicely.
The tube is then removed. About the same discomfort level as having a smear test.

All the best,

Skip

The IUS (Mirena).

What is the IUS?

First of all, please don’t confuse it with the IUD.
The IUD is the contraceptive ‘coil’ and a major problem with it is that it tends to make your periods heavier, longer and sometimes more painful.

But the IUS is quite different, because it contains a hormone. In addition to being a contraceptive, it actually ‘treats’ your periods – usually making them shorter, lighter and pain-free. So it’s often used in order to treat period problems. And it is quite often given to post-menopausal women, in order to help them ‘balance’ their hormone replacement therapy (HRT).

The letters ‘IUS’ stand for ‘intrauterine system.’ (‘intrauterine’ means ‘inside your womb.’) But a lot of people refer to the IUS by its brand name, which is ‘Mirena'.

To the racist nitwits which are answering...BLACK men and women aren't the only people ON WELFARE...Mainly in the SOUTH!!! I do believe it's a bit invasive of 1's privacy, nevertheless, I do suppose if the federal government is taking care of you, they must have a little bit say so in how you proceed to live your life (so long as you're accepting the money). I feel requiring a drug experiment monthly wouldn't be a horrible suggestion both. Like anyone else said...If we have been competent to vote, i might vote for it. Pleasant query, by the way EDIT: might be now not so much MAKE the girl be on birth manipulate, or have an IUD put in, possibly have some instructions or limitations stating that in the event you were to proceed to have kids at the same time receiving welfare, that it could be cut off since all they may be doing is adding to what folks may remember the crisis. Allow them to decide on...Either the IUD or get cut off if they have got more youngsters. As a Catholic, it's against the faith to be on any type of birth manage, but like I said...There must at the least be some limitations.

My wife had such a device installed in her after our baby girl was born. It was a 5 minute install. I'm sure instalation is not the correct medical term but is a term that guys understand so sorry about that. Anyways, the thing last 5 years and it works great. My only complain is that it has this wire thing that hangs in there. Well, that little wire thing can prick you (the man not the woman) every now and then depending on the position being attempted at the time. I had a joke about how this device really worked by discouraging sex hahahah. I think the IUD is a bit different but it must be the same principle.

Oh in some people it cause them to gain some weight. I don't know how much truth there is to this though. Consult your doctor.

there are two types of iud, the one your talking about is the newer one with a hormone on it. i had the old one and it was horrendous and i swore i'd never have another, my mate has the new one tho and she now has no periods, no pain and no infections. on the old one she had periods, pain and alot of infections. insertion is uncomfortable with both iud's but getting them out is fairly easy. they are as effective as the pill but there still is a slight risk of pregnancy. and they dont protect against stds but as long as both of you are faithful to each other than that shouldnt be a problem. they're good as you have it put in and forget about it. you should check the strings every so often tho to make sure it hasnt moved. and if you man can feel the strings then just go back to the doctors and they'll "crush" the ends of the strings so he wont be able to feel it.

IUD has caused many problems because a foriegn object in you is un natural and may cause future problems like heavy bleeding and future infertility. Stick with the Pill and take it at the same time every day. Make it a habit when you go to the kitchen and have breakfast and take it at the same time. Dont smoke because nothing prevents damage from bad habits, Take it like your daily loo routine. it sounds funny but the morning is when we see the loo and keep your medicine there. Also see another doc because I am a 43 year old woman and did my research.

There can be serious and permanent risks, there can be ongoing pain/discomfort, there can be extra bleeding, it's not 100% effective, some IUDs have punctured the uterus, others have been "delivered" along with a baby. Because they have a "string" there is possibility of infection - not just tiny ones, but ones you can die from.

When does life begin?
at the time of conception? or at the time the fertilized egg is implanted? What are your feelings on that issue.?

Yes, it does stay in place, usually. And it can be the most predictable of all forms of birth control.

I had an IUD in for only 4 months then had it removed. My periods were horrible, I felt a lot of discomfort and the worst part was when my boyfriend knocked it out of place while we were having sex. I personally will never have one again and I don't recommend it to anyone.

Ive had an IUD for almost 3 years now, and love it. At first, it was painful and caused stomach pains but then they stopped and I have had no problesm since. It is better than being on the pill... I got pregnant on the pill and so did my sister...

But i would recommend it, personally.!

Good luck

I am male and have no direct experience with this. I have read in my medical dictionary about IUDs and they seem like a bad idea to me. The way I think is that putting things like breast implants, lip fillers, and other invasive things into a person's body that do not save their life and may result in harm are a bad idea. With the options for birth control that are available today, a pill, a condom, a foam, and implantable birth control sticks, I don't think placing something in the uterus is necessary. Getting an infection in there would most likely be very uncomfortable and would it effect your ability to have more children? I would be against it, if it was my girlfriend/wife thinking about this. There are better ways.
