STORAGE SPACE is an issue to be addressed. If you bring a three month supply of detergent and soap, that might not be too cool if you really needed your limited space for clothes and books. I would say, bring what you think you might need for the first month, but try to be realistic: most kids bring too much. Remember, you will probably be home (your parents' home) for a weekend within a month or so of the start of college, and will have a pretty good idea of what you have used and what you will need to survive.

It would probably be a good idea to get advice from your college about what to bring. This is the kind of thing they are usually very good at: the office of admissions or housing are always a good places to begin your inquiry. Above all, don't sweat it, they probably get asked these kinds of questions all the time.

Also remember, Wal-Mart is everywhere these days, even (especially) in college towns. So, whatever you don't have, you can get it.

The other answers are very good. Especially the one about how the other's will try to bum off of you....it is very accurate!

However, if you are going to be living in an apartment rather than a dorm...then yea if you have the storage space and can get a good deal on buying items like that in bulk it may save you a little money in the long run. My last year in school I lived by myself in an apartment and I hated making special trips out to buy detergent, soap, etc. every couple weeks. I finally started buying larger quantities and was glad I did.

I say just try to get to winter break and even if you run out of something you could just go grab it at the store no real biggie. What I say to stock up on is toilet paper... me and my roomies ran through rolls sooooooo fast :P

You can buy supplies AT college. Plus, average dorm rooms aren't big and don't have room for months and months of supplies. Just buy your normal size and get more when you need it!!! There are stores.. it's not like it's a giant black hole or something...

Just buy what you need. If you have a lot on your shelf, everyone will be bumming off you.
