Subtract 8 from both sides. That leaves the equation as x=17-8. So what is 17-8? Feel free to use your toes if you run out of fingers. (Joke, not meant as an insult.)

If I remember correctly you do the opposite of the sign. In this case, it is x+8=17 you would have to do 17-8=9 therefore x=9.
