Yes.

Is this your "validation" code or your "CD key" that you are referring to? The CD key from any XP cd should work (provided it is the same version, Home/Professional/x64), but the validation code still needs to be obtained from Microsoft.

The key and the cd are matched. If you try to use the key from another xp when registering on line, it will refuse. Your product key should be on the pc somewhere (unless you are using a pirated copy of xp).

ummm probably it would work..
generally it doesn't matter what cd you used to install Windows 98/me/xp/vista WHAT matters is that you have a legit CD KEY (one that has not been used before) you could also call microsoft and ask.

Ain't gonna work dude - you must have a VALID copy of an operating system (Windows 2000,etc.) - the upgrade checks right off the bat of the install.
For Pete's sake - do it right and buy a legit copy for $80.

If you don't have a key, you need to pay for one.

Alternatively, use Linux or FreeBSD, and avoid the whole license-fee bullshxt entirely.

Probably not. You probably have a pirated version & an upgrade won't work on it.
