I have an hp desktop with a pentium D with 2.66GHz, 1 GB of RAM running Windows XP. The laptop I just got is a toshiba with an AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-52, 1GB of RAM running Windows Vista. I'm thinking about returning it because it is soooo much slower than the PC. At rest it uses half of the system's RAM and takes almost three times as long to start up as the PC. What would be the best way to get the performance up? I've thought of some options: buy another gig of RAM, install Windows XP on the laptop, buying a faster processor for the laptop (seems too expensive for the effect it would have). What do you guys think of these options? any others?

Yes, Vista is very slow...you really need 2GB of RAM to get Vista up to par. It's a resource hog. XP would run great on those specs, so feel free to put the blame on Vista.

I think you missed the point of a laptop. A lap top is not meant to be faster than a desktop. A lap top is a computer that allows you to be on the Go. It is very expensive for a laptop to perform at the same level than a desktop simply because the tehnology of the laptop is more advance. There are size constriction so sacrifises must be made. If you really want a fast laptop then buy a game laptop but expect to pay big bucks for it. That is when compare to a comparable desktop.

I suspect Vista might be the problem. Windows just gets bigger and bigger every time. Also, the processor speed is not all that determines a computers speed. There is ram ofcourse, but most importantly bus size. The desktop probably has a bigger bus size.

My suggestion is to find out which services you can turn off to make your pc faster. There are many things that start up by default that you can turn up. Another suggestion is to switch to a lighter version of a program. For example norton antivirus is very good software but it is also known to slow down your computer a bit. There are other antivirus programs that are just as good and don't take up so many resources. . I would start with that.

Well Vista does require more spec to run fast. Installing XP will make it run faster. The underlying issue is that a laptop can never match the speed of a desktop.

Hard disks and RAM are the two bottle necks speed wise. In a laptop because of the size restrictions the HD is going to be a lot slower than on a desktop.

Another gig of RAM will speed up your laptop and you can play with the Vista settings to turn down some of the graphic options to make it run quicker.

Hope that helps,

Vista Home premium requires 1gb RAM, so you are running the OS at the absoulute minimum for the pc to operate correctly. I would add a gig or 2 if possible to the laptop. This will solve the laptop issue.

laptop ram is expensive
a new processor is just a waste
so I'd just take the easy root get rid of vista and all its bloatware and install either Ubuntu with beryl or just put windows XP on it.
