Hypertext Markup Language, is the predominant markup language for the creation of web pages. It provides a means to describe the structure of text-based information in a document — by denoting certain text as headings, paragraphs, lists, and so on — and to supplement that text with interactive forms, embedded images, and other objects

(HyperText Markup Language) The document format used on the Web. Web pages are built with HTML tags (codes) embedded in the text. HTML defines the page layout, fonts and graphic elements as well as the hypertext links to other documents on the Web. Each link contains the URL, or address, of a Web page residing on the same server or any server worldwide, hence "World Wide" Web.

HTML is an acronym for Hypertext Markup Language. It's essentially a programming language that is standard on the web. There is a .html file which has all of the code to it and that specifies how a site should look, what should be on it, what images there should be, all of the text, how the text should be formatted (font, size, etc.) and all of those things. If you're interested in HTML or creating your own website, I would recommend you check out: http://www.w3schools.com/html/default.asp

Hyper Text Mark up Language is a high level language...the practical upshot is this...It was a pain to show a Mac file in windows and vice versa, although macs were generally more forgiving. HTML was created so that the language says...hey, I said Italics! I don't care how you do it or what kind of machine you are. Just do it the way that you know how. This way, whether it is a unix, mac, windows, or whatever, everyone sees the page look the same.
