Many distros will allow you to download the files necessary to boot your machine and then you download only the programs you need/want. Debian Sarge is one of them... I used this sometime back. But it is still a download process so good luck

Yes, but with difficulty. The easiest method is likely a bootable USB key. Also you could install it in a virtual machine like QEMU using just a downloaded CD image without it ever touching the CD.
Ultimately, it depends on what variant of Linux you want to install.

It is possible to install to a USB drive and then install from the USB drive to the internal drive.

There ARE certain distributions that can be installed from floppy disks, but these are fairly rare. If you have a fairly modern system, you can order Ubuntu or Kubuntu from their websites, for free. It may take a while, though (mine came in two weeks).

yeah u can. use VMWARE WORKSTATION software. but for this u need to have a windows operating system installed. using VMWARE u can create a interface between windows and linux. and u can easily switch between the both OS.

yes if its already burned to a cd just insert the cd if it is an iso image you will need to burn the iso image to disk using nero
