I have a wooden planter, and don't want it to rot, so can I use a plastic lining to protect it, or is there something better?

I have holes drilled in the base, and slits cut in the plastic, do you think it will be okay?

your plastic lining should be fine. the slits will allow for drainage, and that's important-good idea. the plastic will hold the moisture in the soil longer (which can be helpful in hot, dry environments, or with moisture-loving plants), so be careful not to over-water.
you also might want to put the container up off the ground a bit so it's not sitting in the water that's draining off.

Plastic Liner For Planters

No.......
Line the planter with the plastic, but take note of what kind of plant is being drowned by the water being held in by the plastic.
To avoid this.....

Put rocks on top of the plastic under the dirt, to keep the feet of the plant from getting damaged.

but some plants like their feet wet......rocks is a safety net.

If its new timber I don't think I would line it. It should take a few years to rot and your plant will like the free drainage .By the time the timber rots your plant will need re-potting anyway

It's ok to do, so long as there is drainage at the bottom for excess water to run away. Without drainage holes your plants could drown if not watched carefully.

Maybe a easier and simplier thing would be to buy a reg. planter with the overflow lid that can fit within your wood one. Then it would solve you problem all the way around.

I know a few people who have them and hated them. They didn't work at all. You should look up the Aerogarden. You can grow herbs, lettuces, tomatoes and so much more. Best of all it doesn't need sun! It has all the lighting requirements the plants need to grow so it can be put anywhere.

Totally! It also holds more moisture in that way! Remember to punch a few holes in the bottom though for draingage.
