I own a house that was built in 1890. It was well kept and is in good shape. I bought the house in 2004. It will soon be time to change the windows and replace the siding.

I have absolutely no idea on how to choose windows and siding. I want to pick windows and siding that will improve the look of the house. I don't know which shape and style of windows to buy to suit the look of my house.

I need help on how to find the appropriate style for my house. I am looking for web sites. Thank you for taking time to help me.

Being an old house you may be able to get a State loan or County loan from the Historical home society, something that will also lower the price of the windows and doors. Make sure you don't do anything to lower the value of the house by to much modernization.

Go to Home Depot for your estimates, they are fair and will give you a very good and compatible estimate. You can also go to Lowes and Sears. One of these may be offering something like a discount for buying both items through them, they may also have a good offer for the installation, along with all the guarantees and warranties available for you.

In a historic house like that you don't want to use vinyl windows. They will ruin the historic value. Either rebuild the existing windows or get wood windows that will go with the house.

As far as siding you should replace it with cedar to keep the house historic. Vinyl or fiber cement will take away from the historic look of the house.

Well I just want to tell you something because I feel it is important and you can check it out if you want. Did you know that vinyl siding is poisoning people? When it is made it releases toxins that cause liver cancer...the same happens while it burn in a fire. So if you want the value of the house to stay because of the age...please do some research of that era. And save some lives.
