The starter spins but does not start the motor,but if you put it in gear and move it forward or backward and then back neutral, it sometimes tries to start.

There is a one-way clutch on the starter drive gear that failed, it is really common on the raptor. Ask your Yamaha dealer for the parts, I am sure he will be able to hand you all the parts you need, just be care full not to screw up the threads on the crank nut by over tightening it, that is also really common.

pull the left cover off and check the statrer clutch gear , this is a common problem w/raptors.

sounds like you knocked a few teeth off the starter gear. remove the starter and see if the teeth are gone
