I used to ask myself the same exact question.
Then I married the boyfriend.
Then we watched baseball together.
Out of the two things I fell in love with, baseball was the only keeper!

Well all of the above. Usually guys are obsessed with something else. Men are such simple things. Thinking about two things at once can fully overwork both brain cells.
Men also tend to go into brain freezes. After work or a period of study men need to put their puny minds into something that they don't have to stress out the nerve conduits. Ironically baseball is one of those stress releases. Its a time for him to escape and go into that brain freeze.
This may sound crass but maybe you could be more liberal in supplying the other interest.
As to why he is obsessed? Well baseball is a rather simple game at the end of the examination.
Another reason for his interest in baseball is something called fantasy sports. Often such a person cares little about the actual sport but is so focussed on getting a good fantasy sports team to win the league.
Other than dumping ginseng and viagra into his beer; dressing into a leather S&M outfit; and pulling out the whip and handcuffs. You either do that or buy the chips, make the sandwiches and grin and bear it.
Remember another thing. Baseball has a season. It is over in October. Unlike other sports this means his guilt should be still riding high into Christmas. Make him get you a normal present and then give you the baseball guilt makeup gift.

Money. I'm obsessed with baseball but nothing beats money. If he's interested in baseball history too, get him either Total Baseball or Baseball Encyclopedia - whichever is putting an updated version out this year. The Baseball Timeline by Burt Solomon is awesome too. I'm not the biggest reader in the world but I read that cover to cover in 2 and a half weeks and it has over 1000 pages giving stories or blurbs on pretty much any significant event that happened in baseball since 1770 to the end of 1996.

The most important thing about baseball can be summarized through a famous quote from the baseball movie "Field of Dreams"
"...The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game: it's a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again."
It has marked our history as a nation, defining the eras throughout the decades. When all seemed dismal during the Great Depression, baseball played on, when there were hardly any healthy men to field a team during the 2 World Wars, baseball continued, and when a father and son try to find a bond baseball will be there.
It is so much more than a stupid game, it is a timeline of who we, as an individual is, was, and hopes to be.

You are very fortunate it is baseball and not one of hundreds of possibilities that would be available to him. My suggestion to you, if he really loves baseball that much than try to learn more about the game yourself and you will have a long and wonderful relationship together.
