My brother has a cild and the mother refused to put his name on the birthcertificate. After many court battles the Judge ordered the name be hyphenated brotherslastname-baby'smothersmaidenname. Now the mother refuses to use my brothers name and still uses just her last name, even on important documents. Can she legaly do that? Wont it cause problems with things such as medical cards, social security, going to school in a few years etc?

Yes, she can. In fact, she can legally change the baby's name back to her own unless there is a court order against it (and there probably isn't). Also, no it won't cause any problems at all.

It probably will. Unless her last name comes first.
But that will be okay, it can all be straightened out as the child gets older.
