I think that it is safe to say that we would all go a lot farther for somebody that we love than we would for a total stranger and there is not anything wrong with that on the surface.

We know a lot more about those that we love and we know that, for the most part, they will not take advantage of us or hurt us.

When it comes to helping strangers, we are far more selective on who we help and how we help them - if we help them.

Most people refuse to help a panhandler because they are convinced that the "bum" will just use the money for drugs and/or alcohol.

Many of the same people would help a total stranger in a heartbeat if the stranger was just involved in a car accident.

We all have our own built-in prejudices which dictate who we are willing to help and who we are not willing to help.

I waver when it comes to the homeless. I have given many homless people a meal or some money and there are many others that I have not helped. Some times it is because I have the impression that they are taking advantage of the "easy way" instead of getting a job and sometimes I am just overwhelmed by the numbers of homeless near my job who are always standing on the corner with a sign asking for money.

I think that we should all be smpathetic for those in need and help where we can but it is also important for those in need to take all the right steps to get proper help as well.

In the case of an accident victim, they just need our help.

In the case of the homeless, there are agencies that they can go through to get aid. Our city and state governments need to do more to help these people as well.

I will continue to occassionally give money to the homeless but I am very cautious about it.

On another note, many people are justifiably afraid to help in certain situations.

If a man knocked on your door and asked for shelter because somebody was trying to kill him, would you let him in? Several years ago, most people would have let him in. Today, many people fear that this man is actually going to hurt them and they will not open the door.

Honestly? I would go further to help a stranger. People that I love I know for a fact have other means of support aside from myself, I would help, but if the help wasn't necessary I'd know and I'd only try to help a little. With a stranger I don't know their circumstances, I don't know if they have any kind of strong support system, and I'd prefer to help them in any way I can to avoid any guilt that may arise later on from wondering if I should have helped more.

I would gladly give my life for the ones I love. Stranger? Depends on the situation. I cannot put a strangers needs above my familys, but if I was asked to jump on a grenade in order to save 20 others lives, then I would do it.

I would go to the end of the world for someone I love, I don't know if it was a stranger. If it was a kid, maybe.

i am not sure that i would take a bullet for a loved one, i think i would be too scared to move if it came to the point that a gun was being pointed at them, but i would do everything i possibly can to help them. for a stranger. . . i would do something. like lend them a few dollars, or hold the door for them, or carry something for them if they asked me. . . but i wouldn't do as much for a stranger as i would for a loved one.

I would do almost anything for someone I love, but for a stranger, it would depend on the circumstances and if I felt they were genuine or a scammer.

Depends on what they want. Clearly you will go further for family! But I try to treat strangers like family too.
