There is no such law. But I've heard that Child Protective Services can require it if there have been past allegations of abuse of some sort. Or if you plan to adopt children, the adoption agency may specify having separate rooms as a requirement.

In general this is not the law. In some states the courts will not allow foster children of opposite sex to share a bedroom or allow children to be adopted into a home where they would share a bedroom with someone of the opposite sex.
However, you can not lose your natural children because you con only afford a two bedroom apartment.

I am not an attorney. There may not be a law against it. However I believe there is a policy (and I am not quite sure what that policy states exacly) within child protection services concerning this. The best advice I can give her is to put them in separate rooms to avoid any problems. Even if she and her husband (if that applies) has to sleep on a couch in the living room that makes out into a bed until she (they) can afford to get a larger home! Go to the website below to read more concerning what is happening to families in America today!

It's only 'against the law' if you are a Foster Parent, and then, really, just against the rules. Children of the same sex can share a room, but not children of opposite sex in the Foster Care System.
If they are your sisters biological children she can have them sleep where she likes. However, after a certain age they will not like the arrangement. Maybe the girl can bunk in with your sister when she hits about ten?

Yes, actually it IS a law in MANY states. Alabama is one of those states. But in Alabama it only takes effect if one or the other of the children is 12 years of age or older. Some states will allow her to put up a divider but the children may not share a bed (bunk beds can be an exception, but often are not). She can inquire with the department of health and human services of her state.

There are a lot of petty laws that have been in the books since the early 1800's. I can see some law like that still around. Even if there still is I can't see how it is enforceable or even if the law would want to enforce it. She could always call Child Protection Services and inquire. Anonymously, of course.

NO ... Not any law that I've ever heard of. Now if the kids were entering or past puberty, she may want to put up a curtain or something to give them a sense of dignity and privacy while changing, but the laws can not dictate that you provide a separate room by gender. Now if there is ever a sexual abuse accusation, you can bet that the case worker will note the sleeping arrangements.

That depends on where you are and how stupid the local police are. You see there are a lot of really old unenforceable laws that would never stand up in court, but the local police have the right to arrest you for. This sounds like one of those laws. Basically the police can harass you and then get ripped apart in court.

It's not a law, however, if she is getting assistance for housing by some agencies, then they have regulations that opposite sex siblings have to have their own rooms when they reach a certain age. I know HUD and DHHR require this if you are using assistance for housing.
