I think it is more realistic to say death is the longest thing you will ever have, however, people say this because relative to the amount of time that time has been around, even a 100 years is a drop in the bucket.

We're all given the same length of minutes and hours and days.
The length of life depends on how people live with it. If one fills his life with so much anxieties and worries so that he feels that problems are almost eternal, and his struggles, almost futile, he is assessing life as hopelessly too long.
But for one who is truly enjoying it like he wants to achieve more, buy and do more, travel more,.. life seems too short.
But to one who loves, life is neither long or short...
It's just "here and now"

They're speaking relatively to the rest of the great events in the world's history. The forming of the species, the origin of the moon. Things like that.

i think it's said because, life can end at any given moment. not everyone has a long life, people die young. so i think they're saying life is too short to worry, so live happy. i guess lol.
