RACE SWINDLER SUSPECTS HELD

Victim Spends Year on Trail of Asserted Fleecers
----------
SAN JOSE, July 4. (AP) - Charged with swindling J. T. Taylor, retired New Yorker, out of $27,000 in a fake horse race deal, C. W. Coleman 55 years of age, and George Brereton, 60, said by officers to be members of the Maybury gang, are in the County Jail here in lieu of $30,000 cash bail each.
The pair were arrested at dawn this morning in Yosemite National Park by Sherriff William J. Emig, Deputy Sherriff Howard Buffington and park rangers on warrants sworn here on Monday when Taylor arrived with word that a friend had spotted the pair in the park, where Taylor had made their acquaintance about a year ago, leading to his placing $27,000 with them as a bet on a horse race supposedly taking place in Omaha. He had been hunting them ever since. http://www.encyclopedia-titanica.org/item/1805/

_CUMMINGS TAMALE PIE_
Five ounces corn chips, 1 1/2 pounds ground round steak, one sliced onion, two buttons garlic (finely chopped,) four tablespoonfuls oil, one tablespoonful chili powder, one can tomato puree, one-half cupful seeded ripe olives, salt and pepper to taste.
Method: Brown meat, onion, garlic and chili powder in oil, adding enough water to throroughly brown and keep from burning. Then add tomatoes and cook slowly until meat is tender and mixture has thickened. Last add the olives.
Grind corn chips in food chopper or meat grinder until finely crumbled. Butter the bottom and sides of a casserole or baking dish and line with crumb mixture, packing closely to make a firm crust.
Pour a layer of the chili meat mixture on the layer of corn chips and alternate layers. Top baking dish with corn chips and sprinkle with grated cheese. Place casserole in oven and bake rather slowly for about thirty minutes. Serve piping hot as soon as removed from oven.

The Griffith Park Fire occurred at 2:26 p.m. October 3, 1933 in Block 36, Dam Canyon in the Mineral Wells Canyon area near the old Los Angeles Zoo. A group of 3,780 men were employed clearing brush as part of the Los Angeles County welfare relief program. A small fire had started at the bottom of a slope and a number of men were ordered or volunteered to fight the fire. A sudden wind change sent a shaft of flame up the slopes of Dam Canyon killing 29 workers of thermal burns and injuring more than 150 others. Engine 56, Hose 27 along with 50 Mountain Patrolmen responded and contained the fire to 46.83 acres.

The month--February 1933--began with a dreadful rumor. Banks were no longer safe, people were saying, and depositors had better get their money out. Herbert Hoover, in his last full month as president, feared a national panic, and he had no idea how to avert it. But the man who would soon take Hoover's place didn't seem worried at all. Even as economic indicators showed the Depression worsening almost weekly, Franklin D. Roosevelt kept uttering cheerful generalities.http://www.usnews.com/usnews/culture/articles/030224/2470thanniv.htm
