It's actually in my head and a series of neurochemical reactions... inasmuch as something CAN be real, yes, THAT is real. More real and tangible than something like, I don't know... a god.

you know, i always think of this now...
there are many times when I felt like I loved somebody and then they stab me in the back and hurt me, and i start to wonder if i really even loved them...and if i ever loved anybodybefore....and if i will ever love somebody and if love exists or is it an illusion or an emotion that comes and goes??

I have never been in a "true love" yet, when i do i probably wont feel the same way and I hope i dont. Because this isnt me talking its the years of lies, hurt, and mistreatment.

Does emotion require proof to validate it as other than an illusion?

Technically, love develops in the brain. And we really don't know what's real and illusion at all, do we? So we take our experiences of what is real and solid and we compare our feelings of love. If we feel a deep connection, a bond beyond the physical desire or the need for security... we call that love.. and as we identify it as such, it must be real.

It's real. There is no "proof," but that's why you know it's real. Something intangible cannot be illusory.

It is possible to fool yourself into believing you love someone, but if you sit down and think about it you'll know whether you really love them or not. If your ultimate desire is for what's best for the other person- whether you like them or dislike them, whether you want to spend the rest of your life with them or push them off a cliff, whether they're your parent or your sibling or your best friend or your worst enemy- then you love them. If you just want the person without genuinely wanting them to have what's best for them, you don't really love them.

Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. if you have all these it is true love sister.

The proof would be in the things you do for your love, that you wouldn't otherwise do for others.

Love is basically a position of faith. If I told someone I loved them and they questioned how I knew that, I would ultimately have to say I don't. It's just a position of faith. I believe I love you therefore I do. I would add one little caveat. Namely, the closer I am to the teachings of the gospel, the closer to true love I am.
