After having visited Athens, which is a must for its monuments and museums, get a flight to Rodos. Apart from this beautiful island (fantastic beaches, nature, monuments of all historical periods, and the most magnificent medieval town in the whole Mediterranean) you can make daily cruises to the nearby islands (it takes a couple of hours only) like Symi (unique picturesque architecture), Tilos, Nisyros (beautiful villages on a volcano) and Chalki...

I just got back from Greece. I have to say that the islands are far better of an experience than Athens...maybe because I went in high season but I particularly didn't enjoy Athens...it was insanely hot, way too crowded, hard to find my way around the streets and the metro, the people were rude and quite scary...and the Acropolis/Parthenon is so overated and it was underconstruction so there was scaffolding and what not all over it. The view from the Acropolis is nice but that's about it...if you want to experience Greece go to the islands for sure. Mykonos is so amazing, it's a lot easier to meet people since the whole island is walkable and small. The people are so friendly and laidback, it's easy to get around, and the nightlife is unbelievable!!! I miss it already! I had the best time there and want to go back already. If you go to Mykonos, stay in a hotel right in Mykonos town, that's the location you want to be at. Santorini is also another island to visit, the views there are amazing! Wanted to go to Crete but didn't have time but heard it's also worth visiting. Don't go on a cruises ship...it's not the way to experience Greece especially since you can't enjoy the nightlife. Go by plane and stay a few nights on a few islands. I booked all travel in Greece through a Greek travel agency called Dolphin Hellas....they booked our airport transfer to hotels and our ferryboat between islands...then book your flight separately. When we were searching for flights out of Detroit, we had to fly into Athens first before getting to our first island destination and we booked a charter flight from Athens to Mykonos through Olympic Airlines for pretty cheap and it was only a 40-min plane ride. Between islands we took a high-speed ferry boat, I think it was like a 2-hour ride...the slower ones can take up to 5-6 hours but they are cheaper.
Good Luck and enjoy, I'm jealous!!!

Hi there! I live in Athens and i've been to most of the islands, so i have to tell you that athens is great but only for a day or two if you visit during ths summer.
In Athens go to the Acropolis, maybe tha National Museum (it's great), chech out Plaka, monastiraki and Thiseio areas (lots of young people and fun stores open all day, great atmosphere there) and at night visit Psyri for a few drinks (it's near monastiraki and it's like a place where alla you can see is different styles of bars and places where you can hear live greek music)
And the next day ship off to the islands!!!!!! Santorini is Great, best sunset in Greece, great beaches, you can visit the old volcano too. Mykonos is full of celebs from all over the world and have THE nightlife. Rhodes also has a awonderful nightlife, great sea, and a medieval castle! Corfu is also Very beautiful, it's like being in Italu, big squares, castles, wonderful beaches... Crete is awesome, you'll love the people and the colour iof it but it's a huge island , hope you have enough time to see all of it ( southern side is almost tropical).
Hope i helped, hope you have a fantastic time here in Greece!

I just returned from my yearly trip to Greece. I base out of Athens where I visit family and my friends there. Always it is mentioned to go to Rhodes, Santarini and others but it just depends on what you are looking for.
I go north for the beaches in the Halkidiki region. I go to Island Poros which is only just over an hour by flying dolphin from Athens and only 20 euro. You have night life there, no hills to walk as in Athens, shops for buying, wonderful food, small boats to take you to nice beaches and then you can take day boats to other islands from there to spend the day not costing you much either. So for less money you can see Athens a couple days, Poros, Hydra, Spetses, breaches, night life all. I got beautiful pictures this year which is not surprising for all over Greece is scenes to see.
Next year I will try to see the larger islands mentioned in other answers.

You should go to a few islands too. But all or even most of them is just impossible. Choose 2-3 preferably on the same ferry line. You could go to Paros and Santorini, for example. Or Syros and Myconos. Or Kos and Rhodos, but in this case it is best to fly to one of them because they are far. A cruis will only keep you on the boat most of the time, whereas teh best is to reduce the boat time to minimum so that you can spend time exploring the islands. see the previous answerer only saw Athens as an ugly port, whereas she probably only saw Piraeus, the port. Athens has amazing monuments and places to visit. And places to see on day trips from Athens, such as Delphi+Hosios Lukas monastery (don't miss the monastery if you go to Delphi) or Nafplio+Epidauros.

Hey man, if u make it to greece then YOU HAVE TO visit the islands!!! I can't tell you which one(s) but try to stay as long as you can to any of them! For sure Mykonos, Santorini and Paros are great but it's a good idea to visit some more. Another good idea I think to make a short cruise there are many cruises but why don't you try www.easycruise.com ?
Have a great stay!

athens its only good for 2-3 days, visit the monumentals and see the night life, not more. You can go by boat to the close islands: spetses, hydra. But fom more days, something you can;t miss is: santorini , myconos, and maybe Milos. Crete is a little far away but unique beauty from the rest.
Not cyprus and Rhodos extremely far away.

As a travel agent, The first question I have to ask which is your budget....You shouldn't stay only to Athens, visit some islands such as Milos- my favorite, Crete-Chania( really baeutiful ), Rhodes- Many things to see and really beautiful beaches...Thessaloniki is really beautiful city also....
It depends and from the period you are planning to visit Greece....I suppose I can really help you, with the tickets, to find you cheap and good places to stay and to inform you for everything... If you want or need anything just contact me...My oficce and I can make you an offer...Kisses...

I was there very recently and I didn't like Athens: the Parthenon is under construction and the city was not very well planned so it has a bit of a disorganized feel. On the hand the islands are AWESOME. Check out Mykonos and Santorini for sure. I also hear that Crete was cool but I have not been there myself. But seriously, the islands rock. Great beaches, great food, fun nightlife! Anyway, take a ferry around.
