For instance, a Honda Civic Hybrid is thousands more than a Honda Civic that is not Hybrid.....why is this when they are the same brand and model?

The technology that makes it a hybrid is still relatively expensive. You need to add electric motors and batteries. Those batteries are not cheap either. Also, they are built in much smaller numbers, so the development costs don't get spread over as many vehicles.

For starters it cost MUCH more just to build a hybrid. The automakers are taking advantage of high fuel prices and not giving any discounts on hybrids (even though there are hundreds of them collecting dust on sales lots everywhere). It is also a very low volume car, which always costs more. The REAL cost begins when the batteries and electronics begin to fail and the value plummets by 60% after two years...

MORE STUFF! regular cars have one petrol engine. electric cars come with extra large battery packs, electric engines, larger generators and the petrol engine. you have 2wice as many moving parts so you have to expect to pay much more.

they are very high in demand right now and dealers know this so they are able to mark up the price because they know people will buy them anyway so they can save a few dollars on gas...
