I have no clue other than to take to a repairman. I would like to save that money if possible. Does anyone here know how to fix this? Is it like car brakes or can they be adjusted? Thanks.

Look on the side of the trans-axle (transmission) and find an small round disc. That is the brake rotor. If you jack up the mower on that side and spin the rear tire it should turn. Tighten up the nut that holds on the brake lever until the disc will not turn anymore. Now back off the nut until the disc turns freely. This should have your brakes adjusted. If this does not work, you may need to replace the brake pads. This can be done easily by removing the caliper and replacing the two fiber discs and readjusting as per above directions. Hope this makes sense and helps. ;-}

The brakes are adjustable. They also have replaceable pads. Look at the tractor from the rear. You should see a long threaded rod sticking through a lever with a nut on the end of it. Tighten the nut. If the pads aren't worn out the brakes should work. If you have to replace the pads you will have to get the mower off the ground to get to them. Get the model number of the tractor and go to sears parts.com and type in the number. It will give you an exploded view of the tractor including the brakes and part numbers. It will give you some idea of how they work and come apart.

Or you could try posting your question to this forum : )

If it's an older model, I realise that you might not be able to see the model number, but there are contributors who could identify it for you & maybe talk you through the process. Good luck with that. Otherwise, I guess you could carry a large rock on a rope & throw it back as an anchor ...

See if you can find a repair manual. See if they have Sears repair center near you they may tell you how to do it.
