I need to find out what kind of boat I am being given. It says its a Chapperal 18 ( The last number(s) could be missing). The current owner says its about 30 years old. Well to me a free boat is worth the restore. We saw it and its not in bad shape. Needs some TLC, but I need to find a site, that might have some info on my old boat. I checked the official website, and they dont have anything older than what they are selling. I would like to retore it to its original state, but need to find out what the heck I am looking for.

Look for a hull ID number on the right rear corner of the boat. If it was manufactured after November of 1972, it should have this number imprinted on the hull. The last two digits in this number represent the year of the boat. For instance, if the last two digits are 77, then it is a 1977 model.

Here is a page that explains the numbering system:

With this number you can find out everything you want to know about it. You can probably call Chaparral in Nashville, GA too at 229-686-7481. They may be able to supply you with a copy of the build sheet for your boat, but they aren't the most helpful people in the business. If you don't get anywhere with them, contact your local Chap dealer. They can probably get information from the factory that you can't, and in most cases they will probably know what part you need just by seeing it.

You might also want to check out some of the boating forums that are out there. There are a lot of people that may be able to help you find old part too.

Good luck, but be prepared to spend at least twice what you are expecting to spend to restore this boat, and you'll proabably never get your money back out of it. There is always more involved, and things always cost more than what you think they will. I'm not trying to burst your bubble, but you should know this before you get started.

Check out fiberglassics.com they have a ton of old flyers and brouchers for old boats. Don't always rely on the title being right. I have seen boat titles that are off by 20 years on the older ones. Check out the Chapparel section and look for the same colors and layout to narrow down your boat. I did that for an old hull I picked up and wanted to find out the original paint scheme and colors. Found out the boat I got wasn't a mid 70's like the guy I got it from (The company went out of business in 1965) it turned out to be a 1958 model. Works and looks great.
