Hi, well I'm only 13 but I need to think up ideas to save up for college!

I know i supposedly "too young" but I need ot save now. Cause my dad spends all his cash on the lotery, beer and cigarettes! Any money that I do save up i have to hand over ot my father for the bills!

I have no choice cause he get's abusive towards my mother if I don't.

I plan on going ot Harvard med which probably is't going ot happen if the finaces are going to keep going the way they are. I would need about 150,000 for just until I get the Med degree or whatever.

I don't know what I'm supposed to do! We're dirt poor even though it may not look like it. But we are. And I need some help in any programs or stuff that can help.

I'm NOT saying I have to go to Harvard but I really want to and most other colleges are around that range.

I want to be a plastic surgeon to help burn vitims and stuff...for a really cheap price! i just don't know how I'm gonna get there!

I'm sorry life is harder than it should be for a 13 year old. But I'm glad you are thinking of attending college and have started planning it out. You have drive! I take it you will be the first one to attend college, so you have all these worries about how to get there.

my best advice like the previous comments is to get prepared. get good good grades and don't lose that determination. Once you get to high school (or even know) get into school clubs/organizations that you find interesting, but specifically clubs dedicated to getting you to college. Look for a counselor, preferrably a college counselor and use them as a mentor. Not only will they help you out with great advice on how to apply, and what college is like, but they can also help you get scholarships and help you get in to college.

I was also the first to attend college and I came from a similar background. Don't worry about the money. There are always loans. But with determination like that I'm sure many colleges might pay for you to join their institution!!

Don't stress about that. Take life one day at a time. High school is when it all comes down to the wire. Find your college counselor, join the Honor society, research scholarships online and in library books, visit campuses. Stay on top of it and don't take NO for an answer.

hope this info was helpful. take care. I wish you all the best!!

Most competitive colleges offer packages to meet all financial aid. If you're actually going to Harvard, I would worry more about getting in than getting financial aid. Harvard has about a 9% undergraduate acceptance rate and around 4% med school acceptance rate so don't count on it. Since they're so well endowed, Harvard fully covers the cost of any student coming from a family making less than 60,000 a year. They also offer fine financial aid to families making more.

For any decent student, in state colleges often offer very good scholarships or can even give a full ride. Personally, I would take this over paying private school tuition at a 2nd tier school.

An average private school education would cost around 45-50k a year including board and books.

If this is a legitimate posting, I have to tell you how much I admire you for having goals like this despite what sounds like a horrendous home life. The good news is that if your family doesn't have money, there are grants available to help with your college education. In addition, if you can stay focused on your schooling and do well, you might be able to get things like scholarships to let you go through school. It is hard for people without money to go to college, but not impossible.

I wouldn't advise your trying to earn your own college money at this point. If your father forces you to hand over your savings, you would be using time you should be spending on your schoolwork for nothing. In addition, the likelihood that you could ever earn enough money to pay for your own education is so slight that even if you really could save your money, it wouldn't be worthwhile. Harvard is extremely expensive and many others are less so, but all would be out of range of a 13-year old.

What you do need is support. I would really hope for you that your mother would take you out of an abusive household. Even if your father doesn't abuse you, it isn't fair for you to have to watch him abuse your mother. I'm so sorry that you are having to deal with this.

You could use a mentor. Since I don't know what part of the country you live in, I can't suggest an appropriate mentoring organization, but if you have a teacher whom you trust, talk to him or her about the possibility of getting into a mentoring program; ideal would be a doctor who could talk you through all the processes ahead of you.

I wish you the best. Life is really unfair sometimes, but I really think you are wonderful for trying to overcome your circumstances.

Harvard recently announced that from now on undergraduate students from low-income families can go to Harvard for free...no tuition and no student loans! To find out more about Harvard offering free tuition for families making less than $40, 000 a year visit Harvard's financial aid. http://www.fao.fas.harvard.edu/ or call (617) 495-1581

Your biggest obstacle is not money, but grades and entrance exam scores. Plan to take all the honors and Advanced Placement courses you can in high school and make straight A's. Colleges also look for well rounded students - students who are involved in community service and take on leadership roles in clubs and school activities. Make sure you take advantage of your high school counseling center too. They can give you lots of good advice. In the meantime, here's a link to Harvard's admission FAQs .
