It has to be on the transfer paper.
The back pack is likely to melt from the heat of the iron.

First off: Why would you want to heat transfer a pattern to construction paper when can print to it directly?

To answer why we use heat transfer paper: try using your printer to print on a cotton sheet or T-Shirt !!! It doesn"t work too well. Does it .Okay with this joke out of the way.

You can only use it on Natural Cotton or woolen items, not Synthetic Materials , like Nylon, Polypropylene or Polypropane etc . Your more likely to melt it from the iron's heat which is not a good thing.

Most backpacks are made with synthetic materials. So that won't work, but you can put stickers on it. or make Stencils of your drawing and paint it on.

Hope this helps.

Yeah you need print on paper, if you iron construction paper it'll probably burn. It's super easy I have it at home, all you do it print it and then iron it but make sure the pic you're printing is reversed. Look at the instructions on the paper, you can try to iron it onto the backpack. I personally think that it would work because it's just transporting the wax, it's just a matter of whether it will stay on or not.

Youll have to print it in reverse (mirrored) or your text will come out backwards and yes youll have to buy some T shirt transfer paper.
