1. Set the CD/ DVD drive to boot first, so you can install the operating system.
2. Format the hard drive and install the OS.
3. Change back if you want (or leave it, as I usually do).

look if it is a newly built tower and you are working as it says in the manual...all i would say is set the primary boot disk or drive to your CD/DVD ROM put in the Windows XP CD or Windows Vista DVD whatever you have....dont go straight to installing the OS...use their feature to format the Hard drive....make sure that you do a complete NTFS format and not the quick NTFS format...and then move on with the installation...I think that should solve your problem...have fun...

Your problem may be BIOS configuration, either you have the hard drive misconfigured, disabled, or possibly if your drive is MUCH newer than your motherboard, it may not be supported. If that is the case, find the latest BIOS flash for your motherboard.

Try the hard drive in another computer to make sure it is working.

Check the cabling to the hard drive. Make sure power and data cables are secure and that there are no bent pins.

If ATA, check to make sure you are using the proper Master/Slave/Single/Cable Select mode for your configuration. This one can be a bugger, since some drives are okay running alone in either master or single mode, whereas some if they are set to master, must have a slave.
