My stomach is hurting & I have a research paper due on Tuesday, & I can't work on it right now because it's hurting too badly. & I gotta clean the house but can't.

Many people think there's no excuse for me to not be able to physically do something, even being in pain. They think that I should still be able to do the task.

Pain interfers with your ability to concentrate. Pain is also a warning; if you are in pain you should NOT do physical tasks unless you know you will not hurt yourself worse. Don't worry about your house; I am sure you are very clean and it is probably cleaner now than many others houses. As far as your paper, can you lie down and rest now and just hurry on your paper tomorrow? I hope so.

The pain will make it harder to concentrate, and if you haven't had much experience in managing chronic or severe pain, it will interfere with your ability to do the paper. Pain isn't merely the presence of an unpleasant stimulus. Pain colors the entire primitive baseline mental context over against which the rational ego erects itself ("ego" in the phenomenological, not the Freudian sense). Thinking in pain is more difficult than thinking in more neutral conditions.
___One can learn to manage pain quite well. If you learn how to think deep thoughts that occupy your mind sufficiently, you can dispense with novocaine at the dentist's office, and not have to deal with that dead-lip feeling for hours afterwards. But that takes time and the kind of experience that sane people don't seek to acquire. It won't help you today.

You can still do it, but it may not be your best effort. It's better to turn in a less than perfect paper, than no paper at all. As far as cleaning the house, you could probably do a little bit at a time. Again, the quality of your work may not be as good as your used to, but its better than not making the attempt.

If you are in that much pain that it is interfering with you being able to think &/or work, go see a doctor. That kind of pain is not normal and usually means something is wrong!
