This bike doesn't have a reserve for some reason and his other one did. He'd only had the bike for about a week when it happened, so I couldn't beat him up about it too much, even though I was stuck on the side ot the turnpike for an hour!

sure, if it is fuelk injected it uses an electric fuel pump. This would continue to run until the key was turned off. I'm sure that's what you heard.

Just for kicks, tell him it's the nut behind the wheel.
If your bike has a carb, there shouldn't be a problem. Running out of gas on a fuel injection model can be a serious mistake. Fuel pumps and pressure regulators can damage. Fuel injectors can also damage by running dry.
Harleys, just like most motors, make clicking noises once the motor stops because the heat expands when the engine is running and as the temperature cools down, the metal goes back to its original shape which creates the "clicking" and "tapping" noises you hear after an engine stops.
I don't wish you bad luck but in a way I hope you lost the bet because the injectors, fuel pump, and regulator are going to cost much more than 50 bucks. Hopefully it was just the engine cooling off.

Sounds like it's a fuel injected bike. Fuel injected Harleys don't have a reserve tank. So disregard the lame comments from the moron. If you turn the bike to run you'll hear a pump sound until you hit the start button to fire up the engine. If the engine died from lack of fuel you'd probably stilll here the pump sound from the injection system. Which is probably what you heard. It would stop as soon as he shut the bike off. Which he's claiming.

I'll agree with everybody else it's the fuel pump. now for the other question when the low fuel light comes on you have from .9 to 1 gallon of gas left. Theat means depending on the bike (and rider) you have anywhere from 35 to 55 miles left. Just pull in to a gas station.

if it is fuel injected, it does not have a reserve.
My bike had a low fuel light that comes on when there is .9 gal left. Not sure what a HD has for fuel level indication. the sound may just have been the ticking of the hot exhaust pipes cooling off.

the fuel pump in a car will go of after the key is turned off to keep the hoses primed for the next start up (no you wont ever have to prime it like a diesel if it runs out)

You don't say what year.
No reserve says fuel injected.
Whenever the key is turned on, the electric fuel pump will run until it has enough pressure.

Looks like you get some new shoes! (or a handbag...)

Probably the fuel pump still running trying to pump fuel....

you prob heard the 'ticking' of the engine cooling off.
electronic fuel injection, if equipped, could have been running but not if the key was off. maybe noise from tires rolling

I don't know about Harley's specifically but some vehicles have fans or pumps that run briefly after the engine is turned off. On a Harley there's no fan, unless he installed one aftermarket.

Good luck.
