I am having issues with my new computer. Every time I try connecting with my wireless card it’s only giving me local access as opposed to Internet access. I am using a Netgear wireless router. Normally it works fine but lately it’s giving me grief and only giving me local access. How do I go about correcting this situation? What am I doing wrong?

You end up with a local addres when your computer can't contact the gateway (router).

Possibilities; your wireless card is off line, your wep key is wrong, your ssid is wrong, the router is turned off, your 802.11 radios don't match (though you did say it used to work), your router is configured to NOT provide DHCP addresses, your computer is not configured to ASK for DHCP addresses.

And the list goes on, and on, and on. But the above should be a start.

Try logging into the router over a wired (ethernet) connection and see if you can figure it out using the management GUI interface.

If you do not have encryption set outsiders may be using your connection and taking up all the available addresses. In this case set encryption (wpa or wep). Otherwise a common cause of this type of failure is that someone has set up a similar router nearby, use his wireless card's utility to "search for available wireless networks". If you see 2 networks with the same name or on the same channel, go into your router configuration and change your ssid and channel, this will get you reconnected.

Are u using a static ip on your laptop, if so make sure the default gateway(your routers ip address on your lan) is set on your laptop. If not make sure your router is connecting to the wan and check it's status.

There are so many things could've gone wrong, have you even checked the Status page within your router's setup mini-server?
