Three places you need to look.
1.) the lease will tell you what is allowed
2.) the landlord tenant act will tell you what is legal
LANDLORD TENANT ACT: http://www.ilga.gov/legislation/ilcs/ilcs2.asp?ChapterID=62
3.) the city and or government entity in charge of land use will have codes and ordinances on the subject.

Best of luck on your research

If they owned the home, and it's comprised of adults, I don't think there's a law that specifically states how many can live there. If children are involved, only 2 people per bedroom. But since you own the home, I'd say anyone not on the lease cannot live there without your expressed permission.

Doesn't your lease say how many people are permitted to live there? Usually the leases say "a family of two and their children" or some limiting phrase like that.

The landlord has the right to limit how many people live there and can evict the people if they don't comply. Do they have kids? Kids must have their own bedroom too. Just toss them out and get some new renters.

Call the local housing authority with your question.
If you leased to them, and it's your personal residence, you have a lot of say in this. If you are an absentee landlord (your house, but you don't live there), different regulations apply.

you should call the rental association in your state. it is so many people per sq ft. also your lease should cover who is living at the house, a lease has names of all occupants, if these people are not listed they need to get out.

depends on the local zoning laws -- in my small town in Illinois that is not spelled out -- but if you own the house and you should be able to put it into the lease the number of folks that can reside under your roof,
