i'm going to a new high school this year for performing arts. I wanted to sign up for sports to get involved. the thing is, is that i never signed up for them at my old school, because all of the girls were very mean. Well this week there is tennis practice. It's early in the morning, and i dont know ANYONE. we're all coming from different towns, so im really scared. I also, never played tennis before. i mean i REALLY want to learn, i have a passion for it. The coach says its fine that i never played. but im worried im going to get there and be the only one that doesnt know how. it's a scary thought of being made fun of, or secluded. you know?? what should i do to get these thoughts out of my head, and try to get ready for practices ?? Thanks in advance for all your help =]

Its great that you are trying something new and getting involved. My advice is to just relax and have fun playing! Since you all are coming from different places, it's likely that nobody knows each other. Which gives you a chance to be whoever you want and make friends with anyone! besides, there are probably people who are just like you, trying the sport for the first time. Don't try to be anyone but yourself and you'll make friends naturally! good luck!

Hey everybody has to start somewhere! So what if you do not know it! Don't worry about it. Just tell everyone this is the first time you have ever played tennis and you want to learn. Just don't go out there like you know it all. And don't be afraid to ask questions and don't be afraid to ask for help. You can't learn if you don't ask. The only dumb question is the question that wasn't asked.
Here are a few tips to help you a little.
First and foremost get you a good racket as soon as you can. One that fits you. Your hand, your size, your weight. It is best to spend the extra dollars at a pro shop than getting one at a big box store.
Several reasons for that:
One: at pro shop they will string the racket when you buy it and the strings will not be loose (have the right tension) Also they will know which strings to use on your racket that is best for your level of play. And be sure to tell them if you are left handed or right handed when buying it.
Two: They will help you get the racket that is right for you. Trying to use a racket with too big or too small a handle is murder on your game, your arms, your elbows, your wrist, your shoulders.
Trying to use a racket that is too heavy for you is also murder on your, wrist, elbow, arm and shoulder. The same goes for a racket that is too light.
Three: You never know how long a racket has been sitting in the warehouse when you buy from a big box shop. Been there done that and I know better but could not resist the sell price. Was that a mistake! Strings so loose felt like I was hitting a wet noodle. Everyone wanted to know if I was hurt because of way ball was just seeming to droop across net.
Four: At big box stores you run danger of racket being warpped from handling and storage. It will also affect your game.
Now: comes the shoes: Get you a good pair of tennis shoes designed and made for the tennis court. You can get them at your pro shop as well. They are well worth the money in saved ankles and knees as well as being able to move on the court without busting your rear end. Again been there done that ! Know better than that !

Just do not get discouraged and if anyone starts ragging you tell them you are just learning, because you are always going to have that "least one" wise a*s that has been playing since still in diapers and lets everyone know it. Just ignore them as much as you can.

And practice as much as you can. Find a tennis court near you with a practice back board to practice on. If not the side of your garage or house (where there are no windows to break) also makes a good back board to practice on.

Good luck and have fun. And FUN is the key word. You are not going to come out playing like Venus Williams so don't get frustrated because you can't.

Oh! when I started playing I needed a racket with a sweet spot the size of a Beoing 747 to hit the ball. In case you are wondering.
