Depends on the department. . At mine, we have a detective unit, they are all Deputy Sheriffs, but we work closely with state and local departments as well.

sheriff's detectives are deputy sheriffs.people who talk down on us is like the idiot above.the sheriffs dept does indeed control the county jails but not the city jails.they have detectives for all phases of crime. we also have organized crime task forces.we also have people in the national auto theft bureau. we also now control the highways as well as patrolling the highways.we also run training schools for many other agencies.we have a fugitive squads who travel all over the country picking up prisoners.go to the dallas county sheriff,in texas, and it will show all the different divisions.
for all those who do not know any better,-a detective is a deputy sheriff.

I guess that depends on what State and county. For an example, i live in Mass and our Sheriff's departments are strictly corrections. As for southern states the sheriff's departments run the show down there outside of the feds and state police. So I would assume that they do have their own detectives.

It varies from state to state and county to county. In Pennsylvania, for instance, the sheriff is solely an officer of the court and has no police powers to speak of.
In Maryland, the sheriffs department is more like a county police department with both patrol officers and detectives.

Sheriffs are like gophers. Thier main duty is jail
overseeing and serving warrants. They will be involved in DUI checkpoints and watching for traffic violators but they could'nt solve a missing snickers bar case.

I've always been under the impression that the sherriff's department is only in charge of housing and transporting people who have already been arrested, however finding and arresting people who have escaped is also their responsability, but maybe that's only here in massachusetts.
