Well, there are public colleges and universities, some of them among the top-ranked institutions of higher learning. The in-state tuition rates are pretty reasonable, at least for undergraduate. Are you suggesting that there should be no entrance requirements? That "everyone" should be "entitled" to attend, regardless of test scores, etc.? That would undermine the process, I think. There are minimum performance requirements for continued college/university attendance, as well.
As for health care, that is a problem that does need some solution.

First of all let me say this, Nicholasrage is COMPLETELY wrong in his assessment that the law is too complex for the lay person - I suspect he may be a lawyer. Now, for your question, I do think something needs to be done about our healthcare system but I don't think we should go the way of Canada, as like one of the answers here, the taxes would be HORRIBLE. As for free college, no! Being poor is not a reason to have free college as there are grants and scholarships that can be had and receiving these is based on academic ability.

FREE?!!!! Nothing is free!!! The money to fund those programs have to come from somewhere... like the people that work and pay taxes...
If someone want to complain about a high tax rate now, aprox 15-20% of your gross for US... then hold on to your boots... cuz if you start funding all those programs your tax rate will hike up to something like 50-60%(ask UK or Canada)... so, for ever 100 you earn.. you only get 50$... In the states we have millions of people that are not legal residents or not paying into the system either... So that means that those of us paying in will have to cover for those who aren't contributing...
Health care... In those socialized system, its great, as long as you don't get sick or need something other than basic care... it could take 6 months to get a cat scan or mri.... you could wait a year for a hip replacement.... Good luck if you disagree with your DR....since it's free care you don't get a choice for a second opinion..UNLESS you want to go with private care... then you will have all the options that they do in the US.. but you will still have to pay, on top of paying for the FREE care you gave 50% of your income for... This all hinges on the fact that you might or might not still be alive!!!
I am not saying that the US has a perfect system, cuz we don't, and there needs to be changes.. but a scoialized program is not the answer...
AS for education....It cant be free....but it shouldn't cost as much as it does... kids shouldn't come out of school with 125K debt...

You are comparing apples to oranges.
People are not "criminals" until they are convicted. The constitution protects the right of someone in such cases. The laws and process of courts are too complex for laymen, which is why they/we are guaranteed council.
Health care, and education is not a "right". They are commodities, just like anything else you can buy. If I want a cheap meal, I go to taco bell, not the "jacket required" restaurant. If I want to get over my cold, I buy some cold medication at the pharmacy, I don't go to the doctor's office. If I do, I make that choice, and I pay for it.
People who want socialized medicine basically want others to pay for their health care. If they can not afford health care coverage on their own, how do you think increasing their taxes will pay for their coverage? People need to make choices in their life, and set priorities. Putting money towards health care, instead of buying the 50 inch plasma or spinning rims on their cars.
I believe the gov't can/should help people in emergency cases, because we are a civilized society. But forcing others (via taxes) to pay for someone else's basic health care is no different than punishing them for making better choices in their life.

I think free college should be for student that keep good or normal grades and not for lower income. Where I live, almost everyone have scholarship but I that really study hard and get good grades don't give me an scholarship because of my income. About health care, I think it should be for free because the longer a person live the more contributes for society.

i agree that free health care should be readily available to all who need it. however if people aren't willing to pay for this service (i.e. tax revenue put into a health care system) then it's never going to happen. "free" does not mean you dont have to pay for it. In canada we have "free" health care however we pay for it by being taxed for it. I'd gladly pay higher taxes to ensure that i have access to healthcare. Education Im not so concerned about. there are ways to make your education cheaper, education funds, scholarships, grants etc. or you can work during your education (which is what i did) Every little bit helps.
however for me (being a mom) Health care is more important to me than education access. I can help my kidlet save up for university, but i may not have enough money if a health emergency were to arise

A) It costs too much money.
B) My cousin is going to make more money than his brothers, who all went to college, because he did an eight week class.
C) If everybody reads the books, who is gonna make the books? There need to be workers. Otherwise nothing gets done. When they all get replaced by robots, yeah, mabye then. But until that day arrives, they are stuck where they are.

When health care and education are "free," it'll be worth exactly what you're paying for it.
Not everyone is entitled to a college education, because frankly too many don't have the brains to handle it.
And if you want "free" health care, as Canada has, you're welcome to move there. Frankly, I'd rather not pay the tax rates they're paying to get their "free" health care.

I think only illegal immigrants deserve free college
tuition. Plus, we should give them free health
care and social security. Food stamps, welfare,
thats just another benefit of being illegal. I love it.
Tax me some more to take care of our brothers
and sisters. Think of all the junkies and addicts that would suffer if we enforced our border laws.

First of all most other civilized industrialized countries do exactly that. And the other night on MSNBC, they said that California and most other states spend more money on building prisons than colleges in this country !
As for health care I think we all know that we in the US spend 2 to 3 times more for health insurance than the nationalized countries and yet have the worst actual health care. When are the Americans going to wake up ?
