All the great conquers over the centuries must have asked themselves this very question. Of course Alexander the Great was too young when he died to forge any perminent empire and Napoleon was exiled before his plans came to full fruitation, and when he escaped he met his downfall. Julius Caesar committed virtual suicide in knowing his own death was to come and failing to do anything about it. Did Hitler have a plan after the Jewish people were eradicated and the world was safely under his control if not in name. What then becomes the purpose of these leaders after they have accomplished all their is to accomplish.

What if the Dictator was benign? Would it be any less of a dictatorship? What if he/she has a benefical idea in mind for the greater good of the human race? Didn't all of these potential World-Rulers think they had the best in mind? (Not to defend the actions of these men)

Everything, believe it or not, comes down to power. Why do kids and parents constantly get into fights about who's in charge? Why do wealthy Republicans insist on tax cuts? Why do dictators rule countries? The answer to these and countless other problems: to gain and/or keep power.

No matter how much you may disagree, it is human nature to crave power and control. The people who want to take over the world are obtaining it for themselves. They simply want to be in charge, to inflict upon the world their philosophy for making it better, which is, if they are successful enough to get a good start on taking over the world, supported by a large number of people, or else those claiming to support it have been bullied into saying so. Others, though, will strongly oppose the would-be conquerer's idea, and they will fight him (usually it's a him) because they believe his idea will not, in fact, benefit the world, or maybe because they don't want someone to have such authority over them.

I think that those conquerors that you mentioned didn't conquer the entire world, and spent the period of time when they conquered very much of the world hoping that they would keep control of it. But I think that everyone that attempts to conquer the entire world has the same fundamental problem that they probably weren't sane in the first place, but then had surrounded themselves with "yes men", so there is no real world influence in their lives, and all of those rulers go senile. Therefore, by conquering the whole world, there is nothing to gain, because the world is then shaped to your own intentions, and at that point, the entire world would revolve around you, so there would be nothing to learn or do but attempt to hold onto that control, and when they control the whole world, the world essentially is them, so there is absolutely nothing to do.

A desire to conquer or rule the world is a form of mental illness. Megalomania specifically. There is no such thing, therefore, as a benign dictator. A silly concept in and of itself. A sick and twisted mind is the one who attempts to rule the world. This is true of "business" as well, were wealth is used to try and gain control of people and resources.

I suspect Alfred Adler was correct in naming an inferiority complex as a "Napoleon complex". A tiny and insecure man who needed to do what he did to feel important or special in the world. The human ego is quite laughable when you think about it.

The best form or Government is a benign dictatorship. But that is impossible as absolute power corrupts absolutely. Even if that dictator is great, he'll die one day and then what?

Jesus answers that question with another one : What shall it profit a man if he should gain the world and lose his soul? Obviously these men never came to that understanding.

Kind of sounds like they were all lead by some unseen force doesn't it? Who knows what's in their heads? I guess it is the same thing that is in a bully's head or a wife beaters head. Total control? insecurity? madness? utter and complete arrogance on par with Satan himself?

In this nuclear age if a "leader" survived WW3 he would have billions of subjects to rule. All cockroaches.
