The book takes place around 1997, as you can see from the death date on Harry's parents gravestone.
(They died in 1981, if i remember correctly)

Why do you think that Rowling didnt set the death date to 1991, so that the book took place in current time?

Maybe the 1981 death date is timed right for the release of the first book. And since there's been some gaps between them, it doesn't add up any more.

Probably because the date of 1981 is what fits with the release of the first book which came out over a decade ago.

Becuase the book was published in '97 and it has been taking place a year at a time. But of course it can take more then one year to write a book.
I do not believe that JKR would suddenly make it seem that we skipped a ton of years but eveyone is still the same. Like they got stuck in a time. It is just how she wrote the books. But who cares at this point? The books are over, and we finally know how it ends.

she started writing much earlier than 1997. she started writing in 1991 about an 11 year old boy that was born in the summer of 1980. makes perfect sense.

That is when she wrote the book. She finished the 7th book on 1993, but didn't finish with editing, publishing, blah blah blah, until 2007
