A 10/100 Ethernet card transfers data at a rate of either 10 or 100 Megabits per second. A 10/100/1000 Ethernet card will transfer data at 10, 100, or 1000 Megabits per second. Keep in mind however that in order to get the higher speeds on your network, all of your other hardware needs to be rated at the higher speeds also. In other words If you want a 1000 Megabit (actually called Gigabit) network, all the hardware on the network needs to be rated as such. Your NICs, Routers, Switches, etc. all need to be rated at 1000 Megabits. Also your cabling needs to be either CAT-5e or CAT-6. For wireless you can forget about obtaining anything even close to 1000 Megabits The fastest wireless that I've seen is under 100 Megabits and that was under ideal conditions.

Well, if you ave what's called a giabit lan "1000 bits per second) internet, you should use the 10/100/1000 ethernet since 10/100 ethernet would limit you to a 100mb per second only. So it's only the speed difference.

10/100 is the transfer rate of data on that particular device and/or slot. 10 megabytes per second/ 100 megabytes per second across an Ethernet connecton.
The 1000 is 1 gigabyte per second transfer rate of data packets on that device.
10/100/1000 shows that the device is capable of all these transfer rates and will adapt to what the motherboard will accept. Legacy boards will be 10 most will be 10/100 and the latest and greatest will be 1000.
The 1K transfer rate has been used for NAS and the such since 2001.

The latter is capable of operating at a higher speed. But it is not really needed (or useful) if:
1. Your Ethernet router is only 100 Mbps.
2. All the other computers on your network use 100 Mbps.
The latter one is only useful if you have a router that can operate at that speed, and if all the other computers operate at that speed. Otherwise, you will still only operate at the speed of the router, and transfer / share files at the speed of the computer you are sharing with.

Speed. 10mbps, 100mbps, 1000mbps. Obviously the bigger the number the faster the connection. A card that has all three can support all three speeds based on the connection you plug into.

these numbers are LAN connectivity speeds.
The first supports 10MBIT/SEC and 100MBIT/SEC transfer rate
and the second supports beneath the two firsth additionaly 1000MBit/S. Of course to run in such speed its necessary fro both computers that are connected to support this speed
