save cable HD DVR movies to DVD?

how can I access the files on my external (or internal) cable box HD DVR hard drive so that I can save them to DVD?
I have an external SATA drive and a 160G internal drive. Box has a USB port, a ESATA port, and a firewire port.

I'm not quite sure how to do that, but if the movie is HD you won't be able to put it on a DVD unless you convert it to regular definition. HD movies will only go on Blu-Ray discs or HD DVDs.
